Flight deals that show their working

Every deal service tells you a fare is 40% off. Almost none of them will tell you off what. Windfall publishes the price it measured against, and how many recent fares that price came from, so the saving can be checked rather than believed.

How the saving is worked out

• The baseline is a median, not an average. One business-class fare in a sample drags an average upwards and manufactures a discount that is really just an outlier.
• Fewer than four observed fares means no deal. Below four observations there is no distribution, only anecdotes. The deal is dropped rather than shown with a guessed percentage — an unverifiable saving is an unknown one, not a small one.
• The sample size appears on every deal. "73% under the usual price, from 12 recent fares" is a claim you can argue with. "Up to 90% off" is not.

A deal is not a trip

A cheap fare is only cheap if the days around it work — somewhere to sleep, something worth doing, a way back. Other deal services stop at the booking link because none of them has a planner. Each windfall opens into a full itinerary: costed, hour by hour, and checked that it is physically possible, including real measured travel time between every stop.
